Eiichiro Oda Confirms the Identities of Every Pirate Who Knows Luffy’s Dream

Luffy’s dream at the end of One Piece is among the biggest mysteries in Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga series. If you’re not caught up yet and want the identities to remain a mystery, then beware of the spoilers below. The closest fans have gotten to Luffy’s dream is the revelation in One Piece Chapter 1060, when Luffy connects it to Sabo’s dream of freedom. He also suggests that it’s something that he can only accomplish once he’s Pirate King. In Chapter 1060, Luffy tells his dream of the Thousand Sunny, earning a near-perfect split of bemusement, as well as confusion, but also reveals that outside of the Straw Hats, only Sabo, Ace, and Shanks knew. Given Caribou was trapped in a barrel on the ship, this led to wide concern on social media sites like Reddit and Twitter that Luffy had let the secret slip.

The identities of everyone who knows Luffy’s dream were revealed with the release of One Piece Volume 107 which dropped on November 2, 2023, via the One Piece SBS. Oda uses this column to conduct Q&A sessions with fans, expanding crucial parts of the manga’s lore. For example, a previous SBS revealed Zoro’s connection to the Shimotsuki Family from Wano Country. In Volume 107‘s SBS, Oda reveals that Caribou didn’t hear the conversation with an…*interesting* reasoning to pair:
A lot of people were worried about this, but please look at the previous page,” Oda says. “His voice could barely be heard only when he yelled with all his might, it didn’t reach inside the barrel. So no worries. No one other than the Straw Hats heard the end of Luffy’s dream!!

This means it’s just Ace, Sabo, Shanks, Nico Robin, Nami, Brook, Sanji, Jimbei, Tony Tony Chopper, Roronoa Zoro, Franky, and Usopp, who know Luffy’s dream. Volume 107 had many more reveals, so be sure to check out either the Japanese version or purchase the volume when it drops in English. VIZ Media holds the North American license for Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga with over 500mn copies, which first began serialization in July 1997. The manga has spawned a successful anime and released a live-action adaptation of the series on August 31, 2023. Season 2 was announced on September 14 and Oda has been playfully teasing fans over the design of Chopper who is set to appear next.
